GOALS
Reading: 80% of students will make 1 year’s growth or more as measured by DIBELS and STAR Reading.
Math: 80% of students will make 1 year’s growth or more as measured by STAR Math.
Parental Involvement: We will encourage parents to be involved in our school community by providing a variety of engaging family events/activities throughout the year. We will measure attendance by monitoring sign in sheets from every event. Following some events, a feedback survey will be sent out to families to give us information to better plan future events.
Overview:
With the increased focus on student data, the Terrace Heights Elementary staff grows daily as a Professional Learning Community (PLC). The Building Leadership Team (BLT) consists of approximately 12 members, which includes a representative from each grade level, the building administrator, the Student Learning Improvement Coordinator, and representatives from the specialists, special services, and classified staff. This team meets monthly to make decisions concerning professional development, school improvement, and other topics that affect the building as a whole. They then take the information to their teams for further consideration. This process allows all members to be honored and respected for their valuable input. In addition, parents have the opportunity to give input through parent association meetings or through informal means such as phone, email, or appointments.
Students at THE attend 180 days of school from 8:55 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classroom teacher contact time is approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes per day. Teachers have five days with 40 minutes for plan time. Students have 30 minutes for noon recess and a 20 minute recess in the afternoon. Teachers are available to students or parents 30 minutes before school start time in the morning and 30 minutes after the end of the school day.
The School Improvement Plan (SIP) is designed and implemented to increase student growth and achievement. Staff believes that all students can learn and continually look for ways to improve achievement for all students. In order to ensure our SIP is meaningful, THE staff analyzed various pieces of assessment data (Smarter Balance, DIBELS, STAR, WELPA, Common Classroom Assessments, etc.) to identify strengths and areas of improvement within our instruction. Based on these identified areas, goals were established by each grade level to target our areas of improvement. We will frequently review and analyze the assessment results, adjusting accordingly to ensure that we are progressing towards our School-wide goals.
Collaboration:
The THE staff meets regularly to collaborate in various settings. Each grade level team has 40 minutes of planning time per day. Every month the grade level meets with the principal and Student Learning Improvement Coordinator to analyze assessment data and make informed decisions concerning instruction and interventions. In addition, the East Valley School District has 1-hour late start every Monday, dedicated to collaboration time. In an effort to make Monday morning collaboration time focused and intentional, teams develop an agenda outlining their weekly activities and a timeline for products to be created. These activities and products are directly related to the school improvement goals developed by each team. Lastly, THE has monthly staff meetings and regular Building Leadership Team meetings to discuss and make decisions on important building wide issues.
Program basics/overview:
Research states that reading at grade level is the number one indicator for student success; therefore, a great deal of time is used to practice reading fluency and comprehension in and outside the classroom. All of our grade levels have approximately 90 minutes for their reading block, broken into 50 minutes of whole group instruction (Core) and 40 minutes of small group instruction (Core support). This year we have implemented the Reading Wonders curriculum and we are using it for our Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and ELL students.
Mathematics continues to be an area of focus. Currently, each classroom has approximately 60 minutes blocked off for math instruction (which includes intervention), centered around the Common Core State Standards. In order to ensure we are meeting all of the Common Core State Standards, supplemental material is utilized regularly, along with the core curriculum. In addition, to increase math achievement, the math intervention program will use Connecting Math Concepts and Math Talks strategies. Students have access to Reflex Math and Accelerated Math as an additional enrichment/intervention within the general education classroom setting.
The LAP, ELL and SPED programs work closely with classroom teachers to provide quality instruction time to students. Intervention time is designed to provide targeted instruction to these groups of students.
Assessment:
Continuing this year is the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Next. This test is given three times a year and progress monitoring (PM) is provided throughout the year for students at risk. Progress monitoring can be administered every 2 weeks. Other assessment data that will be looked at regularly include Smarter Balance interim testing data, STAR Reading and Math, and classroom common assessments in mathematics and reading. The data will be reviewed frequently to ensure we are providing appropriate instructional activities and interventions to all students.
Response to Intervention (RTI) continues this year. This program is intended to provide all students the very best instructional strategies we can offer for student achievement. In recent years RTI has focused on reading and math and this practice will continue.
